John 3:16 is evidently the most popular verse in Scripture because it embodies the true essence of love—sacrifice.

Matthew 22:36-40 teaches that:

Loving God means sacrificing yourself and fleshly desires in order to please Him.

Loving others involves sacrificing your comfort to ensure the wellbeing of others.
