It is 1876, Anambra River country, southeastern Nigeria. A young man has been in exile for eighteen months when he pulls a spear from a streambed that turns out to have been buried there for sixty-one years, waiting specifically for him. An ancient priestess trains him for three weeks. Then he walks back into the village that banished him, into a palace where a secret brotherhood is trying to destroy the kingdom's spiritual foundation from the inside, and he has to stop them before the children they have taken run out of time. The Spear Accursed is historical Igbo fantasy, rooted in the real mythology of Ikenga and the Ndi Ichie Akwa oral tradition, and it reads like what would happen if the foundation story of an entire nation turned out to have been waiting for one specific person to arrive.
