Welcome to the Toolkit

Completing a final-year research project can feel demanding: you must understand the research process, organise your chapters, manage supervisor feedback, format a long document, reference sources correctly, and prepare the final file for submission. This toolkit turns those tasks into manageable steps, reusable worksheets and worked examples.Who this toolkit is for

This guide is designed for undergraduate and Higher National Diploma (HND) students across management, social sciences, education, humanities, science, technology, engineering, environmental studies, and related disciplines. Some templates will be more relevant to certain research designs than others.

How to use it

  1. Read the relevant module before beginning that stage of your project.
  2. Complete the worksheets as you work; do not wait until the end.
  3. Keep a separate copy of your working project and back it up regularly.
  4. Ask your supervisor to clarify instructions you do not understand.
  5. Replace every blank field and sample label with information that is accurate for your own study.

QUICK START: YOUR FIRST 30 MINUTES

  1. Collect your department’s project handbook and record its rules in the table at 3.1.
  2. Fill in your details in the Bonus workspace (page headed “My project details”).
  3. Work backwards from your submission date and add target dates to the tracker at 1.3.
  4. Book your next supervisor meeting and write down your questions.

YOUR DEPARTMENT’S GUIDELINES COME FIRST

This toolkit provides general guidance and practical planning aids. Departmental handbooks, approved research proposals, supervisor instructions, ethics requirements, and official submission rules take precedence wherever they differ.
