It took one moment for me to realize my upbringing wasn’t as harmless as I thought.

My parents instilled discipline and good values.

It wasn’t till 3 years ago.
My childhood trauma awareness started when a scene in my book, Breaking Barriers, opened something I hadn’t seen before about my upbringing.
That moment revealed the sharpness in my tone, which I believed was “just how I am.”
The impatience I displayed without effort.
I was a no-nonsense person and a super achiever.
I connected the dots.
It was all trauma, but disguised as “normal African upbringing.”
That thing we proudly call strength was actually survival.
I could clearly see the patterns,
the very ones my husband tried to point out in the early years of our marriage, which I shut down with, “nothing do me.”
“That’s normal where I come from,” I would say.
But that “normal where I come from” was the memo I missed.
Normal, where I came from, didn’t make it normal for a healthy environment.
By then, I had already bled on everyone around me, my husband and my children.
So I said, “This has to stop with me. Stop with my children. It can’t find its way to my grandchildren.”

Now I help others confront this monster called childhood trauma, with compassion, truth, and grace.
