THE LAW OF SEEDTIME AND HARVEST - EMEKA ANSLEM

After the flood that wiped the earth clean, scripture tells us that Noah built an altar unto the Lord. He offered burnt offerings and the aroma pleased God so much that He made a promise to Noah. He said;

“While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.” (Genesis 8:22 KJV)

These words were not casual. They were eternal. They became the foundation for how life on earth would function until the end of time. Yet, for centuries, many of us have reduced this covenant to mean nothing more than “giving money in church.” As important as financial giving is, this promise from God runs deeper than money—it is the very operating system of the earth.

When God spoke of seedtime and harvest, He was first talking about literal farming. To Noah and his descendants, farming was life. The ability to plant seed in the ground and reap food was a guarantee of survival. So God was assuring them: “You will never again live in fear of famine. As long as the earth exists, if you sow into the soil, you will reap a harvest.”

But if you look closer, there seem to be a code within that statement, and subsequent events reveals it. Think about it: how would God deal with the problem of man’s sin if He would no longer destroy the earth? Simple, He would solve it by sowing a seed. He would sow the seed of what He desired to harvest. So, He began sowing seeds in history: prophets who called men to repentance, kings who led with His wisdom, and servants who spoke His truth. These were seeds. But for the greatest harvest—the redemption of mankind—He sowed His most precious seed: His Son, Jesus Christ.

And as with every true seed, Jesus had to die before multiplying. He said, “Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.” (John 12:24). The death of Jesus was the seed. The billions of souls reconciled to God today are the harvest.

This is an eternal mystery: if God Himself had to sow seeds and wait for harvests, what makes us think that the earth will give us preferential treatment? The principle applies to everyone, whether you are a farmer, a student, a business owner, a parent, or a preacher. Life is a field, and you only harvest what you plant.

Apostle Paul agrees with this mystery:

“Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” (Galatians 6:7).

Notice Paul said whatsoever. This means the principle is universal. Sow kindness, reap kindness. Sow excellence, reap opportunities. Sow laziness, reap poverty. Sow corruption, reap destruction. Sow to the flesh, reap corruption. Sow to the Spirit, reap eternal life.

This principle is both a warning and an invitation. It warns us that no one escapes the harvest of what they plant. But it invites us to intentionally predetermine our seed by carefully choosing the harvest we want. Do you want to be a doctor? Then sow years of study, sacrifice, and diligence. Do you want to build a godly marriage? Then sow the seeds of love, patience, forgiveness, and faithfulness. Do you want to walk in spiritual power? Then sow prayer, fasting, consecration, and obedience. The future is not a mystery—it is a harvest of the seeds you are sowing today. If you can determine the harvest you want, then decided on what seeds to sow becomes easy. No matter how much you sow financially, you can’t become a medical doctor. Ofcourse you can sow financial seeds as you journey through that path, but becoming a medical doctor requires more than sowing financial seeds, it requires a seed of diligence, discipline and more.
