This is a wrong understanding of how a joint account works.

It doesn't mean one spouse controls the account. It doesn't mean the wife has to beg for money when she needs it. Neither does she have to get it when the "lord of the manor" decides to hand it to her. It's all about the beauty called checks and balances. My husband and I have continuously operated a joint account - from day 1 of our marriage. However, I had a personal account where my salary was paid. But I acknowledge it's not for everyone. To operate one, you must know why you need it. You must have an open mind and a good understanding of your partner. We agreed on the checks and balances when we decided to have a joint account.

Each of us could withdraw whatever was needed. But we set a limit that each could withdraw without the other's consent.

Ours was not animal farm ... I had equal withdrawal rights as Oga.

But we always informed the other why the amount was needed, though not necessarily before withdrawing.

To withdraw above the maximum limit, both our signatures were required.

It meant we discussed and agreed on the purpose of the withdrawal.

It has worked for us throughout our marriage.
