Kenneth was a team leader of a company that had gone on to shape the entrepreneurial world for good. Exemplary, productive and visionary as a leader, he was an icon to look up to among his competitors.
Then there came this day he was having a one-on-one chat with two of his team members. These members told him that they had a new career goal and were ready to pursue it.
It was worrisome for Kenneth as these members have been an integral part of the team, and as a result of this newly found career goal, it seems he was going to be losing them soon.
The team members felt it was time to pursue a new career goal from being sales representatives to being business devclopers.
This worried Kenneth a lot as the team members were the best available hands they had for the sales managerial role at the company, and from the conversation he had with them, they seem resolute with their decision that no matter what Kenneth says, they were going to pursue their new career goals.
So Kenneth finally came to a decision that rather than trying to persuade them not to pursue their new career goal, he was going to encourage them to, giving them his full support.
He told them that provided they keep doing a marvelous job at the sales department of the company, he was going to support them in ensuring that they acquire all they need know as a business developer, especially considering he was a business developer himself.
Having assured them that, he was yet afraid that they might suddenly start losing interest in the sales department and their inputs dropping value, which would tell on the company’s output. He was afraid that for every support he gives to them to pursue their new career goal, it was going to result in reduced input from them in their role as sales managers.
But he later discovered he was wrong.
Over the course of 16 months that they pursued their new career goal, they gave their best input ever to the company. Kenneth was amazed and elated that his decision to support their new career goal instead spur them to giving their best to the company.
Unlike Kenneth, so many leaders are so fixated on themselves, their whims, their insecurities and what have you, such that, looking beyond their noses, and looking out for others’ good are impossible to them. They know leadership is more about the people, but they can’t follow it up with the right actions, hence the people suffer, and suffer gravely.
In this book are five irrefutable principles to responsible leadership that has the people at the center, and has responsibility to the people trailing it.
Most of the time, leaders know what is expected of them, but how to go about it is what they lack.
Apart from filling you in with the principles of responsible leadership, this book, in its 6 chapters, spells out in vivid details how you could go about exhibiting responsible leadership in your sphere of influence while providing you models you could tailor your leadership role with, so that you would not end up being a leader posterity would scoff at.
