‎Inspiration Behind the Hymn

This hymn was conceived at Atan Cemetery, Yaba, Lagos, during the burial service of Late DCNS. Sekinat Iyabode Agbede.

‎As I stood among countless graves, I found myself surrounded by silent testimonies of generations past. I saw the graves of little children and of men and women who had reached old age. Some had only recently been laid to rest, while others had been buried decades earlier. I noticed names and dates stretching back many years, reminding me that every generation eventually passes through the same gate.

‎Standing there, one truth became impossible to ignore: death is the great equalizer. Wealth, position, influence, age, achievement, and earthly ambition all lose their distinction before the grave. Kings and children, the rich and the poor, the celebrated and the forgotten, all return to the dust from which God formed humanity.

‎Yet the cemetery did not leave me in despair.

‎As I reflected on the Word of God, my thoughts turned to the promise of Christ's return. I remembered the glorious hope declared in Scripture—that one day the trumpet of God shall sound, the dead shall rise, and every grave shall surrender those entrusted to it. Those buried yesterday and those buried generations ago shall all stand before the Lord.

‎I also reflected on the uncertainty of earthly life. We devote years to building dreams, making plans, storing possessions, and preparing for tomorrow, yet death may interrupt those plans in a single moment. In that realization, the Lord reminded me that while human plans may end, Christ has conquered death, and everyone who places their hope in Him possesses a hope that reaches beyond the grave.

‎This hymn is therefore both a solemn meditation and a confession of faith. It reminds every singer that life is brief, death is certain, Christ is victorious, the resurrection is sure, judgment awaits all people, and our greatest wisdom is to walk faithfully with the Lord until we stand before His throne.

‎It is my prayer that every person who sings these words will do so with reverence, hope, and a renewed desire to live each day in the light of eternity.

‎«"For the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed."

‎— 1 Corinthians 15:52 (KJV)»

‎Lyrics

[‎Verse 1]

‎Silent graves now call us all,

‎Dust returns to waiting earth;

‎Kings and children sleep as one,

‎Until the trumpet sounds.

[‎Verse 2]

‎Years we build with careful hands,

‎Dreams may fade in just one breath;

‎Death may end our finest plans,

‎But Christ has conquered death.

[‎Verse 3]

‎When the trumpet shakes the earth,

‎Every grave shall yield its own;

‎Young and old shall rise again,

‎To face the judgment throne.

[‎Verse 4]

‎Teach me how to walk with You,

‎Help me love You more each day;

‎Till I stand before Your throne,

‎Clothed in righteousness.

‎Soli Deo Gloria (S.D.G)

‎To God alone be the glory.
