The Heroes of the Brown Scapula

According to an ancient tradition, Our Lady of Mount Carmel gave the Brown Scapular to St. Simon Stock, Superior General of the Carmelites, on Sunday, July 16, 1251, as a sign of protection and a pledge of peace and with a promise of eternal life to the Carmelites: “Whoever dies clothed in this Scapular shall never suffer eternal fire.” This promise of protection and eternal life has been extended to all the faithful who take Our Lady of Mount Carmel as their spiritual Mother and are consequently invested with the Brown Scapular.

Today, the Brown Scapular is not only a symbol of consecration to Our Lady of Mount Carmel and of her protection, but also a principal means of drawing close to the merciful heart of God. Furthermore, according to Pope Paul VI, the Brown Scapular is one of the two most recommended forms of Marian devotions which the Magisterium of the Church recommends to the faithful. That is why many Popes, Bishops, Priests, Religious men and women, and the lay people have not only been invested with the Brown Scapular but have also worn it devotedly and perseveringly. Subsequently, they have enjoyed the maternal protection, love, companionship and intercession of Our Lady of Mount Carmel
