Basic Teacher Training for SSCE Holders

In the context of Nigerian educational system, Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) is the least qualification acceptable in the teaching profession. 

However, we are not ignorant of the fact that some schools, especially those in the remote and semi-rural areas, still employ secondary school leavers to fill the teaching positions in their schools. 

Although, the Nigerian Ministry of Education frowns at this practice, it is obvious that we cannot totally eradicate it. The secondary school leavers are still very much useful in areas where professionals are not accessible.

Meanwhile, some of these school leavers are evidently intelligent and smart. As a matter of fact, I believe they are not so empty-headed that they won't be able to impart knowledge to toddlers and preteens. In fact, some of them naturally have a great passion for teaching and are even willing to pursue a career in education. 

Thus, rather than discouraging and denying them of the opportunity to try out their teaching ability, they can be trained to have basic knowledge in the education field and improve their teaching skills, so that they can be employable, pending the time they will be furthering their education. 

In other words, if we cannot stop the practice of employing SSCE holders, we can help them become better and suitable for the profession, to some extent.  

This basic teacher training, put together by COMPETENCE AND PRESTIGE HUB, is designed to provide the secondary school leavers with the basic skills they need to function, either as a home lesson teacher, an assistant classroom teacher or a primary class teacher. 

With this training course, participants (SSCE holders) will be equipped with the major rudiments of teaching and at the end of the program, a Basic Certificate in Education would be awarded, as an evidence of participation.

It is important to mention again, that the individuals who undergo this training are most suitable for home tutoring jobs but they can also be appropriate for the early childhood and primary classes (Grade 1-5), especially for schools that cannot afford to employ the advanced-level teachers.  

This course/training is designed with remote schools in mind, as they mostly engage the services of these SSCE holders. 

On a general note, the aim of this program is to upgrade the SSCE holders who are intending to take up teaching jobs, from the point of being a total novice to the point of proficiency.
