UK Education Meetup Idea Bank

Hi! My name is Aramide and I run a free school in Nigeria.

My biggest dream has always been to change how development happens in low-income communities by empowering children with the mindset and skills to solve the problems in their own communities. And what better way to empower them than through quality education?

This was why I started @talentmineacademy, a free school that provides 12 years of free high quality education to children in low-income communities. In our free school, we use a Problem Based Learning Model and a Service Learning Model to allow our students apply what they learn to solve real world problems in their communities.

In October, I had the opportunity to attend the One Young World Summit in the UK.

During this trip, I knew I wanted to connect with other like-minded individuals like me - who are passionate, committed, and driven to change the education landscape in Nigeria.

During our meetup, we asked ourselves the following questions:

1. How can we improve learning quality for children in under-resourced communities?
2. What is working in the UK education system that can be applied to our contexts? 
3. What character traits do we see in children who go to school in the UK, that our kids in Africa could benefit from?
4. How can we help children living in low-income communities to dream bigger and access better opportunities?
5. How can we raise children in low-income communities as young leaders who can solve the problems that their communities face? 
6. How can we put our kids in the driver’s seat of social change where they are able to start solving systemic problems from a young age?

Since our meetup, we have implemented some of these ideas in our free school, Talent Mine Academy, and we are excited about the positive impact we have seen from this.

This is why we have decided to share these ideas with other committed and passionate individuals and organizations who are keen on making education more qualitative and accessible in Nigeria and Africa.

We believe that these ideas will be helpful to others as they were super helpful to us.
