Mbopo, the traditional fattening room of Akwa Ibom, was both a celebration and a confinement. Young women were adorned, taught, and prepared for womanhood. They were trained and mentored by older women to navigate expectations of beauty, marriage, and social standing. It elevated their status, yet often limited their agency, as it intertwined empowerment with restriction.

This artwork explores that paradox: the pride and the lessons inherited, alongside the pressures and constraints it imposed. It invites reflection on which elements of tradition should be preserved and which should evolve, allowing women to claim their identities fully.

Retelling the Mbopo story through art is an attempt to honor the women who came before, confront cultural complexities, and reclaim a narrative of sisterhood, selfhood, and community that must not be forgotten.
