Choco sitting on the  stool close to the oven where her cake was, jumped up when she saw the message. Wobbling hands she struggled to hold her phone still as she typed her name on the search bar of the PDF file.

Mummy! My name is out she screamed.

What course? Her mum thundered from the bedroom. That was three rooms from the kitchen in the 8-room bungalow her late dad built.

Her younger sister has now joined her in the kitchen as they both read the reg number out excitedly to be sure it was hers...

Science Lab tech they choursed to her mum.

Her mum sneered, not medical lab science? She inquired again with her high pitched voice, as she strolled towards the kitchen door through the corridor that led to it...

Let me see, she said  squinting as choco brought the phone to her face.

I used the search bar if my name was there it would have shown, choco said taking the phone from her as she bent to look at the cake to be sure the manual oven hasn’t taken out vengeance on her cake, she wasn’t about to present a burnt cake to her customer.

Mum strolled back quitely.

Choco sat back on the stool chatting up her friend who got admission in the same sch but for  MLS informing her, that her name came out too but for the course SLT.

Why was mummy so quite she thought for a moment, then shrugged the thought off.

The sun was set already, their neighbor James had returned from work. He worked in a cybercafe that paid him 15k as his salary for a month,  his sch was also on strike.

She saw him in his pinkish coloured shorts and singlet in the compound with a small loaf of bread.

My name don com out she said with her voice raised so he could hear her from that distance.

Shey it’s UNN, he retorted.

Yes nah i told u but its SLT she said with a tone of triump it’s a five years course she added. Ahh for what nah! He said. Omo congratulations but if nah me i no go encourage u make u read that course.

Choco’s countenance showed disgust and she managed to spit out the question, why?! If u get into something like that its your choice, but i tell you, it’s going to be a waste of your time dear, just try and write another jamb and this time aim for MLS better so u can get it, at least it would guarantee you a job and a career to hold unto in this world, abi u want to join our group of confused associates in Nigeria shey? He asked with his hands on his waist  and his lips broadening as if to give a draw a smile,  revealing his tiny waist and bony chest and it disgusted her. She turned around and walked into their house. James and his family were tenants.

You won’t be accepting that admission her mum said as she sat on the stool in the kitchen holding the pestle ready to hit the cocoyam in the mortar she pulled it close to her before tucking her wrapper between her legs for the “onugbo soup”( bitterleaf soup).

Why mummy, choco mumbled close to tears. Mummy this is the fourth year. My mates have already graduated only me remaining.

Her mum ignoring her tears said, Nigeria doesn’t care about dreams and passion dear, what must be done must be done to survive.

You would read a medical course or nothing!

This is so that when you come out, you would know that you have a career path.

But u Know i cannot stand the sight of blood, choco said.

Nne everything is practice, even nurse nneka couldn’t stand it as well, but see where she is today.

I don’t want you to be hungry in the future, she said finally before raising the pestle on the hot cocoyam.

Dr Choco, can i come in, someone knocking slightly by the door asked.

Yes! Come in! They are about striking o nurse ada said shutting the door behind her. Who?, She asked, Doctors nah, weren’t you at the meeting?Nurse ada asked.

No i wasn’t, Federal government has refused to pay our salaries and i know it would come to this she said in an exhausted tone.

I really don’t know why the government would be playing with the health of her people but is it their fault, they all go abroad for their treatments. Nurse Ada added.

I just came to drop this file so u could look at the patients improvement.

No problem just drop it there, choco said before putting her head on the table.

I just wish someone who truly cares for the progress of Nigeria and is ready to work gets into power next year, if not i really lack words for what we would be seeing next. She said to herself as she drifted to her dream land where it’s safer.
