# Chapter 2: Ten Years of Silence 🕰️

The red dust of the village was still there, but Kofi’s shoes were different now. They were sturdy leather boots, worn from years of walking the rows of his thriving cocoa farm. At twenty-eight, Kofi was no longer the boy under the mango tree. He was a man of respect, a man who had taken his father's small plot and turned it into one of the most productive farms in the district.

His house was the pride of the village—painted a clean cream color with a sturdy tin roof that didn't leak during the rainy season. Every morning, he woke up to the sound of the roosters and the smell of fresh earth. He had achieved everything he thought he wanted. He was successful. He was secure.

But every evening, as the sun began to sink low over the same school field where he had once stood in a graduation cap, a familiar ache would return to his chest.

He would sit on his porch, a cold drink in his hand, and look at the small silver ring that now sat in a wooden box on his bedside table. Akosua had sent it back three years after she left, with a short, tear-stained note saying she couldn't keep a promise that felt like a weight. That was the last time he had heard from her.

Ten years. Ten years of silence.

The village girls whispered when he walked by, and their mothers often brought him extra fufu or soup, hoping he might finally choose a wife. But Kofi’s heart felt like a field that had been left fallow for too long—hard, dry, and waiting for a rain that never came. He was successful, yes. But as he watched the shadows stretch toward the old mango tree in the distance, he knew that success was a lonely thing when you had no one to share the story with.

Then, one Tuesday morning, everything changed. A dusty white van pulled up to the village post office, and among the utility bills and farm catalogs, there was a bright, glossy envelope.

A high school reunion. Saturday at 7 PM. In the city.

Kofi felt a jolt of electricity run through his fingers as he held the invitation. The city. Her city.
