Not the gentle harmattan haze that usually preceded December, but a violent, unapologetic deluge that turned Ahmadu Bello Way into a river of refuse and reckoning. Inside the glass coffin of the Federal High Court's third floor, Justice Olufunmilayo Adebayo watched the water streak down the windows and thought, for the first time in twenty-three years on the bench, that she had lost the ability to tell innocence from performance.

The accused stood in the dock. His name was Chidi Okonkwo, and he was thirty-four years old. To look at him—the careful press of his white shirt, the way he held his chin at an angle that suggested both defiance and prayer—one might see a man wronged by circumstance. But Justice Adebayo had seen wronged men before. She had also seen wolves in the clothing of lambs, and she could no longer trust her own eyes.

"The court will rise."

She did not rise. She remained seated, her hands flat on the mahogany bench, feeling the grain where generations of judges had left the ghost of their palms. The court registrar's voice echoed off the walls, and somewhere in the public gallery, a woman began to weep.

That woman was Nneoma Okonkwo, Chidi's mother. She wore a black iro and buba and a gele so tight it seemed to hold her grief in check. Beside her sat a man in a bespoke suit, his face a mask of Caribbean composure—Dominic Baptiste, the lead counsel for the prosecution. On the other side of the aisle, Chidi's lawyer, a firebrand named Yinka Shonibare from the chambers of Falana & Falana, shuffled papers he had already memorized.

Justice Adebayo cleared her throat.

"In the case of the Federal Republic of Nigeria versus Chidi Okonkwo," she began, "on the charge of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, identity theft, and money laundering, contrary to the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act of 2006..."

She paused. The rain intensified.

"The court has reached its verdict."
