Wait, let me tell you why I believe that with every part of my being.

My twin and I were born prematurely. We were the first children my parents were expecting, but our birth didn’t go as planned.

My twin died a few moments after birth.

Then there was me.

I wasn’t crying. I wasn’t moving. I lay there lifeless.

The doctor picked me up and kept tapping me, trying desperately to get a response. My mother watched in fear, believing she had lost both of her babies.

Then, after what must have felt like an eternity, I cried.

The moment the doctor heard my cry, he turned to my mother and said, “Congratulations, she is alive.”

Think about that for a moment.

What changed?

Nothing about my size. Nothing about my appearance.

The only difference was my voice.

The moment I spoke, I was declared alive.

That experience shaped the way my mother raised me. She constantly reminded me, “Speaking is living.”

Those three words became one of the greatest lessons of my life.

Today, after more than 15 years as a teacher and confidence coach, and after working with hundreds of children across nursery, primary and secondary schools, I have seen another kind of silence.

Children who know the answer but never raise their hands.

Children with brilliant ideas but never express them.

Children who are intelligent enough to succeed but lack the confidence to introduce themselves, ask questions, make friends, lead discussions, speak before others or step forward when opportunities arise.
