Black Is Beautiful is a charcoal pencil drawing about self-recognition.

This work is about restoring honour to how a dark-skinned woman sees herself; on her own terms, not in comparison or contrast to others. 

My subject’s gaze is calm and assured, and this is rooted in an understanding of her beauty as something complete and sufficient.

The piece challenges the habit of measuring worth against external standards. It affirms that beauty does not need permission, external validation, or an opposition to exist.

You're not beautiful as opposed to. You just are... beautiful.
