As she put it, “Building a business online shouldn’t feel this miserable.”

Building an audience and selling to them is genuinely hard work. But there’s a difference between hard and miserable, and a lot of creators have been taught to accept the second as the price of the first.

If every week feels like you’re forcing something that refuses to move, that’s worth stopping to examine. It’s rarely a sign that you need to try harder. It’s usually a sign that something in your approach doesn’t fit.

Hard and miserable are not the same thing

Hard looks like: writing sales copy takes real effort, growing an audience takes consistency, and pricing your work takes some trial and error. That kind of hard produces something, even slowly.

Miserable looks like: you’re posting content you don’t believe in because you heard it “performs,” you’re selling a product you don’t actually enjoy talking about, or you’re copying a launch strategy from someone whose audience, niche, and starting point look nothing like yours.

That kind of hard rarely produces anything, because you’re fighting the format itself, not just the difficulty of the work.

If your results feel disproportionately small compared to the effort you’re putting in, that gap is data. It’s telling you something isn’t fitted to you, not that you need to push harder against it.

Copying someone else’s blueprint is one of the most common reasons it feels miserable

A launch strategy, a content style, or a pricing model that worked brilliantly for one creator can flop for another, not because either creator did it wrong, but because their audiences, offers, and starting points were different.

Among creators who’ve actually built real traction selling digital products, one pattern keeps showing up: the ones who broke through weren’t running someone else’s playbook. They rebuilt their offer around their own audience’s exact problem, in their own words, and that specificity is what made it convert.

If you’re grinding at something that isn’t working, the fix is rarely “do more of it.” It’s usually “make it fit you specifically” before you keep pushing.

A system beats another burst of effort

A lot of creators mistake inconsistency for a motivation problem, when it’s really a systems problem. You post hard for two weeks, get tired, go quiet, and blame yourself for lacking discipline. But without a repeatable system behind your content and your offer, that burnout cycle is almost guaranteed.

A personal brand without a system behind it stalls out. The creators who keep showing up sustainably usually have a simple, repeatable process for turning their content into sales, not just raw willpower keeping them going.

How to tell if you’re doing the wrong thing versus doing the right thing badly

Ask yourself three questions:

Do you enjoy the actual work, separate from the results?

If you’d still want to make this content or sell this product even on a slow month, you’re likely on the right track and just need more reps.

Are you seeing any small signals of traction, even without a big win yet?

A few genuine replies, a repeat customer, someone sharing your product unprompted. Small proof beats no proof. If there’s truly nothing, after a real, focused effort, it might be the offer or the audience fit, not you.

Are you copying someone else’s exact approach, or adapting the principle to your situation?

Principles transfer. Exact tactics rarely do.

Selar removes the friction that isn’t yours to fight.

Some of the struggle creators feel has nothing to do with their content or their offer. It’s fighting clunky checkout systems, chasing manual payments, or trying to deliver a course through file links that break. That kind of struggle adds nothing and teaches you nothing.

Selar exists to take that part off your plate: a store, checkout, and delivery system built specifically for African creators selling to local and international buyers, so the only hard part left is building something people genuinely want, which is the kind of hard work that’s actually worth it.

Start selling on Selar: selar.com/start

We recently spoke with a creator doing incredibly well with her coaching business sales, but feeling anything but proud of…

[154,150
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v14.2 -
