Week 1: The Two Names of God
Theme: From Potential to Performance
Scripture: Exodus 6:1-3
The Context: When Things Get Worse
We begin the year in a strange place: Disappointment.
In the chapter before our text (Exodus 5), Moses obeyed God. He went to Pharaoh and said, "Let my people go." But Pharaoh didn't let them go; instead, he made their slavery harder. He took away their straw but demanded the same amount of bricks. The people turned on Moses, and Moses turned on God, asking, "Lord, why have You brought trouble on this people? ... You have not delivered Your people at all."
It is in this moment of crisis—when the Promise seems to have failed—that God speaks. He offers a New Name.
