PREFACE TO 1 THESSALONIANS

213 Pages

The Word Expositor’s Commentary on the New Testament is written with one central purpose—to open the Word of God clearly and faithfully for the benefit of pastors, teachers, and all believers who desire to understand and apply Scripture in their daily walk. This volume on 1 Thessalonians, based on the text of the African International New Testament (AFINT), follows that same aim.

This commentary approaches the biblical text from a straightforward evangelical perspective, seeking to explain what the text means and how it speaks to the life of the church today. It avoids the elaborate theological arguments and speculative discussions often found in academic commentaries, focusing instead on the plain sense of Scripture as illuminated by the Holy Spirit. The goal is not to impress the scholar but to equip the servant of Christ with a faithful exposition of God’s Word.

Paul’s first letter to the Thessalonians is among his earliest writings and one of the most pastoral in tone. It reveals a heart deeply committed to nurturing a young church in faith, love, and hope. The letter combines warm encouragement with firm exhortation, reminding believers to live lives that are pleasing to God while waiting expectantly for the return of Christ. Its message remains as relevant to the African church—and indeed to the global church—as it was to the believers in Thessalonica.

This commentary is arranged in four main sections reflecting the natural flow of the letter: the Background, which provides historical and contextual insight; the Introduction (1:1–10), where Paul expresses gratitude for the Thessalonians’ faith and witness; the Reminiscence (2:1–3:13), highlighting Paul’s ministry and deep affection for the church; the Practical Exhortations (4:1–5:25), which offer guidance for holy living and steadfast hope; and the Conclusion (5:26–28), which closes with a benediction of grace and unity.

The exposition throughout is intended to be faithful to the inspired text, simple in expression, and rich in spiritual truth. The emphasis is on clarity, conviction, and application—helping the reader not only to understand the message of 1 Thessalonians but also to live it out.

It is my prayer that this commentary will encourage believers to hold firmly to the Word of God, to persevere in holiness and hope, and to find renewed strength in the promise of Christ’s return. May every reader grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ as the Word of truth is faithfully expounded.

PREFACE TO 2 THESSALONIANS

The Word Expositor’s Commentary on the New Testament: 2 Thessalonians aims to provide a faithful and spiritually enriching exposition of Paul’s second letter to the Thessalonian church. Written from a straightforward evangelical perspective, it combines sound biblical scholarship with devotional insight, offering readers a clear understanding of the text and its enduring relevance for Christian faith and practice. The commentary intentionally avoids speculative or divisive theological debates, maintaining focus on the inspired message of Scripture and its transformative application to life and ministry.

This volume is based on the text of the African International New Testament (AFINT), with the Nestle-Aland Novum Testamentum Graece (28th edition) serving as the textual foundation for exegetical analysis. Each section follows a consistent structure comprising Overview, Text, Exegesis and Exposition, Practical Application, and Final Reflection, designed to guide readers through a logical and spiritually reflective study of the epistle.

The Overview introduces the historical, literary, and theological context of each passage, highlighting its place within the broader flow of Paul’s thought and its connection to the life of the Thessalonian believers. The Text presents the passage in focus, establishing the basis for analysis and interpretation.

The Exegesis and Exposition sections provide a verse-by-verse analysis of the epistle, combining linguistic precision, contextual understanding, and theological clarity. Grammatical, syntactical, and rhetorical features are explored to illuminate Paul’s intent within his historical and pastoral context. The Practical Application section then translates these exegetical insights into relevant principles for Christian living, discipleship, and ministry in today’s world. Finally, the Final Reflection offers a concise theological synthesis, drawing together the main truths of each section into a unified pastoral conclusion.

In 2 Thessalonians, Paul addresses themes central to the Christian experience—steadfastness amid suffering, correction of false eschatological teaching, and the call to disciplined living while awaiting Christ’s return. His letter reassures believers of God’s justice and peace while urging them to persevere faithfully in their calling.

It is the prayer of this work that readers will not only gain understanding of the apostolic message but also be strengthened in faith, encouraged in endurance, and inspired to live in the peace and hope that flow from “the Lord of peace Himself” (2 Thess. 3:16).
