I thoroughly enjoyed reading the poetry, Our Broken Home. As a high-school English teacher and American reader who was raised with very similar values in a very traditional home, I love that David Lubari is willing to share the heart and emotions behind a more traditional perspective of marriage and structure and gender roles while clearly articulating that his goal is to initiate conversation.
As a parent, the messages confirmed the sanctity of life and the beauty of committed parents. I was challenged to be the best parent possible and to advocate for commitment and love in families around me! I especially enjoyed "Leaving a Mark" and the extended metaphor in "Destroy Not the Sprouting Seeds" as it captures an idea that I deeply believe - that humans are our greatest asset and that if we cultivate minds and human potential, real progress can be made. It was truly a gift to read through the poems slowly and reflect on my own life and upbringing as well as the childhood I am providing for my two-year-old son!
The themes that Lubari addresses are serious and it is clear that some of the current cultural ‘messages grieve him. I appreciate the way he sets up the conversation in the "Sensitivity and Reader Advisory" and done his best to initiate conversations around these very important topics.
