How to Use the Family Expense Tracker (Step-by-Step)

Step 1: Start with the Right Month

At the bottom of the Excel file, you’ll see tabs for each month (January, February, March, etc.). Click on the month you want to track first.

Step 2: Use the “Daily Expense Tracker” Sheet

Each month is linked to a Daily Expense Tracker sheet. This is where you record expenses day by day.

Step 3: Enter Your Expenses

For every expense:

  • Enter the date
  • Add a short description (e.g. groceries, transport, eating out)
  • Enter the amount spent
  • Always use the same categories throughout the month.
  • This helps the tracker correctly calculate totals and show where your money goes.

👉 Be honest and consistent — small expenses matter.

Step 4: Let the Tracker Do the Maths

Do not delete or edit formulas.

The tracker automatically:

  • Totals your daily spending
  • Summarises monthly expenses
  • Shows where your money is going

Just focus on entering data correctly.

Step 5: Review Your Monthly Summary

Go back to the monthly sheet to see:

  • Total expenses
  • Spending by category
  • Areas you overspent or saved

This is where awareness is built.

Step 6: Use It Daily (Best Practice)

  • Update expenses daily or every 2–3 days
  • Avoid end-of-month guessing
  • Set a reminder on your phone if needed

Step 7: Reflect and Adjust

At month-end, ask yourself:

  • What drained my money the most?
  • What can I reduce next month?
  • Where did I do well?

Final Tip

Consistency matters more than perfection.

Even small, honest entries will completely change how you understand and manage your money.
