Let's Talk About Sex

The long vacation is here again.

With the excitement of a long vacation also comes the horrors of sexual abuse. This period is often the time most children experience physical, emotional, or sexual abuse from people who are supposed to care for them in the absence of their parents.

According to UNICEF, six out of ten children in Nigeria experience emotional, physical, or sexual abuse before the age of 18, with half experiencing physical violence. Because the real way kids lose their innocence is from adverse childhood experiences, like childhood sexual abuse or watching that hard-core porn video, it is very imperative for parents to educate their children with the RIGHT information on sex.

Because either way, know that it’s going to happen– your child will know about sex somehow. So you’re going to have to explain sex and conception to your child or your child learn from somewhere else.

The world is a much more sexualized place than it was when we were growing up, and sexuality isn’t something we received much guidance about from our parents. This is the first conversation of many. You have the opportunity to be your child’s ally in a way that our parents weren’t for us.

The earlier you normalize conversations about sex, the easier these discussions will be!
