If there is any field I have gained significant experience in, it’s communication – more specifically, articulating my thoughts in spoken or written words. For almost 20 years, I have not just been passionate about communication but skillful in its deployment.

Storytelling for me has always run in the genes; my father is hands down one of the greatest orators that I have ever met. I grew up in a family where we had an endless stream of visitors largely because my father’s public speaking was in constant demand; whether it was to host an event, a traditional marriage, represent his community at meeting, bail someone out from the police station or simply to settle marital conflicts between couples – my dad is that good.

My mother on her part waited for more than a decade to have children, so as you can imagine – when we eventually showed up, my mother had stories for days. My mother has a very graphic memory, so when she is recalling an event, she will give us a play-by-play of the things that happened. That’s how we knew so much about our family backgrounds because our mother will give us the history of how she was treated when she was waiting to have children, how her in-laws proposed that my father choose one of three women as her replacement and many other interesting stories.

Those that knew me back then could testify that I moved around with a pocket-sized dictionary because in the course of my reading, I would find words that were exotic and since I didn’t own a mobile phone at the time – I did the next best thing. It wasn’t to show off but I just knew that my future had something to do with written and spoken communication and I had to double down on learning. It wasn’t uncommon during my secondary school days for teachers to ask me to read out a book for the rest of the class or one of my neighbours to use my ability to read and articulate myself as a reference for one of his sons who was my age mate – his grouse against his son was that the boy always joined me to play in the compound but had never asked to join me when I was reading. Fortunately, Geography and Literature were elective subjects at the time, no prizes for guessing which one I eventually chose. So by the time I finished secondary school, I had greatly refined my communication skills.

So when people see me churn out brilliant think-pieces now on platforms like BellaNaija, they don’t know I have been doing it for a very long time. Secondly, in my sophomore year, I had this crazy idea of authoring a book. Remember I had been keeping a journal? That journal had evolved in terms of content to include poems and other artistic expressions. The book didn’t sell up to 50 copies but as at 2011, I had achieved something – I became a published author.

Why did I decide to bore you with all these details? Simple, everything I did then – I eventually did many years after. From journaling then to writing brilliant think-pieces now, I have since co-hosted and co-produced multiple radio shows, I have been invited on television several times to share those same insights I shared with my classmates then, I have written four more books since my debut with anthology more than a decade ago. Above all, those things I did for free then – I now do for a fee.

·        My skills as a ghost-writer, author and communications strategist have largely paid my bills for the past seven years. I have ghost-written, created content and consulted for numerous HNIs, not to mention top organizations in Nigeria and beyond.

My point is to show you that great communicators don’t just fall from the sky, they put in the work. Yes, it’s easier now to learn certain things but my story shows how much I was intentional and willing to sacrifice for my dreams. It was also important to establish some credibility, everybody is an expert these days but thought leadership is never about titles, it’s about influence.
