In 2015, the total value of web payments in Nigeria was N91 Billion. Sometime in 2016, Shola Akinlade and Ezra Olubi launched Paystack - a payments company allowing Nigerian businesses to accept & make payments online. By 2018, Paystack had grown so fast and was processing N10 Billion monthly - roughly 10% of the total value of web transactions in Nigeria and by the end of 2019, the total value of web transactions reached N470 Billion.

There are similar stories in the savings & investments space. In 2016, Nigerian mutual funds had only 400,000 investors in their funds. Fast forward to 2022 and fintech platforms Piggyvest and Cowrywise boast over 2 million investors who invest via their platforms. Similarly, digital broker Chaka was one of the largest single broker contributors to the Nigerian stock exchange in 2020.

Financial technology services in Nigeria are not just some razzle-dazzle, blitz and glamour industry. The products being built change the lives of millions of Nigerians - helping them build better money habits, providing credit for SMEs and enabling them to expand their businesses beyond Nigeria's borders. Without services like Paystack, it would be difficult for me to accept payments for this book.

I wanted to learn what made companies like Paystack, Piggyvest, Cowrywise & Chaka so impactful. What could we learn from those knee-deep in building & communicating these products? How did they acquire their first customers, what metrics are important at early-stage, how are they measuring large marketing teams and cross-platform campaigns, and how do they decide what new features to build or what new geographies and regions to expand to?

I spent months speaking to operators and leaders at some of Nigeria's fintech companies and The Growth Handbook - Scaling Fintech in Nigeria is the outcome. We talk about building user trust, community building, sales, product, storytelling, performance marketing, expansion, analytics & so much more.
