Anti-malaria Product

The active ingredient in KEDI Qinghao is Artemisinin; the extraction of Artemisia annuna.

Professor Youyou Tu was awarded a Nobel Laureate Prize in 2015 for her discoveries concerning a novel therapy against malaria. She revolutionized how malaria is fought through the extraction of Artemisinin from the nature’s best botanical, Artemisia annua by applying ancient techniques from Traditional Chinese Medicine through isolation and purification of Artemisinin from the plant.

Artemisinin, however, fights the ultra-structure of the parasites in the erythrocytes phase and thus leading to their termination in the body cells. The parasites die rapidly due to loss of nutrition and cytoplasm and this happens through the production of peroxide bridge mediated by the free ferrous ions produced by Artemisinin.

Pharmacology

Artemisinin has a strong effect in killing plasmodium in erythrocytes so as to control malaria outbreak and symptoms rapidly. It is thought to affect the function of membrane mitochondria system. Artemisinin works on the ultra-structure of parasites in the ethrocytes phase, including working on the food vesicles. The parasites die rapidly due to losing most of the nutrition and cytoplasium without supplement. The mechanism was unstable organic free radicals or other electrophilic media, which was produced by the peroxide bridge mediated by the free ferrous ions produced by haem metabolism, combined with parasite prot.

[PHARMACOLOGY and TOXICOLOGY]

Toxicology

Increased fetal absorption was observed in pregnant mice in reproduction toxicology test. No tetratogenic effect was observed.

(PHARMACOKINETICS)

Artemisinin is rapidly absorbed and extensively distributed in main tissues after oral administration. Human pharmacokinetics parameters: oral dosage 2mg/kg, T max = 1.33h, C max= 0.71mg/L, t1/2=1.57hrs. Artemisinin is metabolized and excreted very rapidly.

(INDICATIONS)

All forms of malaria, especially effective for treatment of falciparum malaria and multi-drug resistant malaria.

(ADMINISTRATION and DOSAGE)

Two capsules as single dose at the time of initial diagnosis, and then 6, 24 and 48 hours thereafter (total course comprises 8 capsules). The oral dose may be taken with warm water.

(SIDE EFFECT)

No side effects reported on clinical dosage. Few cases of temporary reticulocyte subsidence are noted.

(PRECAUTIONS)

Ø Artemisinin is not recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy unless the balance between safety and risk has not been evaluated by doctors.

Ø Piperaquine phosphate has a long half life, please do not repeat doses in half month.

Ø Please administer strictly to dosage. If symptoms persist, please consult your physician.

Ø Patients with the following conditions are strongly advised NOT to take this drug: Allergic to any composition of this drug; Pregnant women; Severe hepatic and renal disease, hemopathy (leucopenia, thrombocytopenia) patients.
