A Faith Built on
Five
Five practices, five rhythms, one life oriented toward Allah (Subhanahu wa
Ta'ala) — the pillars are the load-bearing structure of Muslim devotion.
Islam presents itself not only as a set of beliefs but as a way of living
— a disciplined path by which a person turns, again and again, to‐
ward the Divine. In Islamic belief this path is charted by the Qur'an,
understood as the revealed word of Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala), and
illuminated by the example of the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.),
known as the Sunnah. For the great majority of Muslims, however,
the everyday shape of the religious life is drawn by five anchoring
practices gathered under a single, memorable image: the Five Pillars
of Islam (arkān al-Islām).
The image is drawn from a well-known saying of the Prophet Muhammad
(S.A.W.), narrated by his companion Ibn ʿUmar (R.A.): "Islam is built upon five:
the testimony that there is no god but Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) and that
Muhammad (S.A.W.) is the Messenger of Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala); the estab‐
lishment of prayer; the giving of alms; the pilgrimage to the House; and the fast‐
ing of Ramadan." The pillars, in this metaphor, hold up the building. Re‐
move one and the structure strains; keep them all and the whole stands firm.
It is worth noting what the image does not claim. The pillars are not the total‐
ity of Islam. Around them stands a wider architecture of belief — faith in Al‐
lah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala), in the angels (ʿalayhim as-salām), in revealed book....
