How Not To Be A Poor Teacher

Dear Educators,

Being P.O.O.R is a result of

Passing

Over

Opportunities

Repeatedly

I remember a colleague of mine,

At the time I met him, he had worked at that particular school for 17 years.

Yes, 17 years.

And you know, as time passes, it dawns on you that

Years have been wasted, leading to regret.

Each time I gave him a lift to his bus stop then,

He would recount how, when he was younger in the profession,

He was like the savior for the subject he came to teach.

They had been failing it before he came to that school,

And when he arrived, they started passing excellently.

All his colleagues left for greener pastures,

But he stayed and got nothing in return.

He later fell sick, and before he resumed work,

He was sacked.

This story pained me so much, and

I thought to myself,

As a teacher, no one or system can help you better than yourself.

There are a lot of opportunities in the teaching profession,

But most times,

They are not within the four walls of the classroom.

This has been my message ever since:

Educators should develop themselves for themselves,

For their future,

And for their children.

Don’t let opportunities to transform your life pass you by,

By neglecting the areas you need to develop in yourself.
