Kevin was burning up against my palm, and the dispensary door was locked. It was 1am. A woman I had never met opened it anyway, looked at my empty hands, and asked me a question I couldn't answer: why didn't I have medicine for my own child? I had run schools for 25 years. I had managed budgets, staff, exam boards, difficult students and parents. And I was standing on a dark rain-drenched street with a sick nine-year-old and nothing in the house to give him. I walked home that chilly night and made a list. By Thursday, the medicine cabinet was stocked. It has not been empty since.
That list became this book. If you're a single parent who has stood in your own version of that dispensary line — not knowing, not prepared, not sure anyone else could possibly be managing this better than you're managing it badly — this is for you.
Single parenting isn't harder because you're doing something wrong. It's harder because the arithmetic doesn't work. Across Europe, 27% of single parents were unemployed in 2021 and another 10% worked part-time, against under 4% of couples with children (OECD, Rapp & Thévenon, 2025). One income absorbs what most parenting research – including Diana Baumrind's foundational work on authoritative parenting – assumes two adults will share. That's not a parenting failure. It's a gap nobody built you a bridge for. This book is the bridge.
Nine chapters. Not encouragement, but systems built and tested against six real children in a real house and backed by the research behind each one:
This isn't theory adapted from a two-parent household. It's the actual framework running a home of seven—six children, one adult, and one income, rebuilt after divorce into something that holds. By 5:30pm most evenings, the dishes are done, the floors are swept, and six children who once needed constant direction now run half the household themselves. Not because the parent running it is exceptional. Because the systems are.
