Recently, my friend asked what I was feeding my baby to look so chubby and bubbly and how my baby was able to start eating solid foods so easily and I laughed because you have no idea.

Let me start from the beginning.

When my son turned six months, I was so excited. Finally, real food! I imagined him happily eating, getting chubby cheeks, and me feeling like a proper mother who had everything under control.

Ehn, that is not what happened.

The first month was a mess

The first day, I made pap. He took two spoonful and pushed the spoon away with his tongue. I told myself, “It’s fine, it’s his first time.”

The next day, I mashed yam. He made a face like I had served him poison.

Then rice. Then plantain. Some days he ate a little. Some days he turned his head away from the spoon like I was his enemy. And every single day, I stood in that kitchen asking myself the same thing:

“Is he eating enough? Am I giving him the right food?”

You know the worst part? Everybody had advice.

My mother-in-law said, “Add more of this.” A neighbor said, “Stop giving him that.” Someone in a WhatsApp group swore by one thing, and another person said it was a waste of time. I saved so many recipes online that I forgot where half of them were. I never cooked most of them because I didn’t have the ingredients, or the strength, or the time.

The fear I didn’t tell anyone

Mummies, there were nights I lay awake next to him, just watching him sleep, going over the whole day in my head.

What did he eat? Was it enough? Was it the right thing? Why does he look smaller than the other babies his age?

I started comparing him to every baby I saw. At church. At the market. On Instagram. Every round-cheeked baby made my chest tighten.

I felt like I was failing, and I was too ashamed to say it. Because what kind of mother doesn’t know how to feed her own child?

I cried in the bathroom one evening so the baby wouldn’t hear me. I’m only telling you this because I know you’re about to start the same journey with your own little one, and I don’t want you to feel as lost as I did.

Then my neighbor, Mrs. Adebayo, noticed.

She came over one afternoon and saw me trying to coax my son to eat. I think she saw it all over my face.

She didn’t judge me. She just said, “I went through the same thing. Let me show you what helped me.”

She brought out her phone and showed me a PDF. The FEEDWELL 21-Day African Baby Weight Gain Meal Plan.

I thought, another plan? Another thing I will save and never use?

But she said, “Just look at it.”

What I saw changed how I felt

Mummies, it was so simple.

Every day was already planned. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. I didn’t have to think. I opened the guide, saw what was for the day, and cooked.

And the foods? Things I already knew. Nothing imported. Nothing that would drain my pocket.

But it wasn’t only recipes. It explained why each food mattered. For the first time, I understood what was supposed to be going into his bowl, instead of just throwing food together and hoping.

It also explained what to give at six months versus nine months: how many times to feed, how thick or soft the food should be, and how to move forward slowly. I had been feeding him like all months were the same!

There was also a section on how to introduce new foods, how to watch for reactions, how to be careful with common allergens, which foods to avoid in the first year, and how to keep everything clean and stored safely.

I remember thinking, “So this is what I was missing. I didn’t need to try harder. I needed a plan.”

And the bonuses? Mummies, they are the real gift.

Bonus 1: The Baby Feeding & Growth Tracker.

I started writing down what he ate, new foods I introduced, how he responded, and his measurements. No more “Did he eat this last week or the week before?” It’s all there. And when I took him to the clinic, I had everything to show the nurse.

Bonus 2: 15 Easy African Baby Food Recipes.

When I got tired of the same meals, I had fifteen more ideas. No more standing in the kitchen asking, “What else can I cook?”

Bonus 3: The African Baby Food Shopping List.

I would just take it to the market. No wandering around confused, buying things I didn’t need, and forgetting the things I did.

What changed for me

I won’t lie to you and say it was magic overnight. Babies are babies, and some days he still turned his head away. But something in me changed.

I stopped cooking from fear. I started cooking with a plan.

I wasn’t scrambling for ideas anymore. I knew what I was giving him and why. I could see which foods he enjoyed and build on them. I felt like a mother who knew what she was doing, and that confidence changed my whole mood at mealtime. My son felt it too. He became more relaxed at the table.
