A Child’s Cry in the Savannah: Tears of Resilience

What happens when a child loses everything he knows, but refuses to lose himself?

Thirteen-year-old Abdul has an ordinary life in Dukku. Then, one night, gunmen arrive. His father is killed. His nine-year-old brother, Hassan, is taken from him. Abdul is left with grief, fear and one impossible task: survive.

But survival changes a child.

Over eighteen months, Abdul finds himself among displaced boys, hungry and frightened children who have learned that the world does not always protect the innocent. Under the shadow of violence, betrayal and loss, he learns to find water, bury the dead, protect those weaker than himself and lead when he is barely old enough to understand what leadership means.

Then he discovers that his brother is alive.

Reaching Hassan means entering the very camp of the man who destroyed his family. Abdul must confront a painful question: when violence has taken everything from you, does becoming violent yourself bring anything back?

A Child’s Cry in the Savannah is not simply a story about war. It is a story about childhood interrupted, brotherhood tested, choices made under unbearable pressure and the quiet courage it takes to remain human when the world gives you every reason not to.

Tender, haunting and deeply rooted in the realities of northern Nigeria, this is a story of two boys who experience abandonment in different ways and take different paths through it.

Abdul's story is about survival. But more than that, it is about what a child chooses to become after surviving.

If you believe some stories should stay with you long after the final page, this is one of them.
