This book was written to honour Widows and those who fight for them.

Losing a husband is a life-altering loss.

For the woman left behind, the mother and wife inside must keep fighting long after saying goodbye to her lover.

Widow’s Backstage was written by Ugo Oji Ama to inspire hope for widows all over the world.

Our stories in Nigeria, shaped by culture and traditions, are unique and yet familiar.

This book is a vivid narration of the pain, disconnect, isolation, and shame that widowhood entails.

After the loss of a husband, a woman’s worth in society is redefined drastically by the norms and cultures that differ across the many tribes and communities.

Nigeria, a country of more than 200 million people, 500+ tribes, and several cultural diversities, is often united when it comes to the harsh consequences for a woman who loves a dead husband.

She’ll often be subject to mockery, ridicule, and inhumane treatment.

Some wish for her to atone for loving and others for living.

In this collection of widowhood stories, Ugo brings the pain and suffering of widowhood to pen and paper.

She dares the reader to be absorbed in their journeys and uncover all the rot that festers in the hallways of culture and that ultimately robs the widow of humanity and a chance to grieve.

Grief is not just a feeling, it’s a gift that many are incapable of giving to the bereaved. Mentally shackled by “age-old” customs, traditions, religious tenets, superstition, and ideals, many have built cages for the widow to live in.

This book is a call to action, for those who have seen the never-ending hell that widows endure, here’s a chance to be and do better. This book gives an authentic view of the stories behind the eyes of a dead man’s wife. It captures the journeys of these brave women and humanizes their suffering such that the reader cannot but be moved to care.
