If the very first chapter welcomes you with triple alliteration, be assured that there will be much more about triple heritage and the tripling that occurs on life’s stage. This is a story of strife and constant movement. You must make haste to grab a copy so that you too can savor what happened in Ibadan, Ibara, Ipokia, Ijebu-Ode, Ijebu-Igbo, among many other locations.

In this lyrical and deeply evocative memoir, Yinka Akanbi weaves a fascinating tapestry of life in post-independence Nigeria through the eyes of a troubled traveler coming of age narrative—a genre of literature the Germans refer to as Bildungsroman. The narrative unfolds across seven chapters, each like a day of the week, chronicling a journey through the heart of Yorubaland.

From the vibrant, multi-religious Omida neighbourhood in Ibara, Abeokuta, to the dense kola-nut plantations of Sagamu and the bustling, competitive streets of Ibadan, Akanbi captures the sights and sounds that shaped his creative soul. Those familiar with his work will recognize that he also has a musical track bearing the same title as the book. In this text, he invites readers into a world of profound cultural immersion, where the rhythmic messages of the bẹ̀mbé drum and the maverick melodies of Ayinla Omowura flow like great streams into his creative enterprise.

Through a childhood shaped by the rich values of his maternal family and the peripatetic life of a policeman’s son, Akanbi explores the complexities of polygamy, the warmth of the Yoruba extended family, and the resilient spirit of a young man undeterred by “the good, the bad, and the ugly.” ÀJÒ is more than an autobiography; it is an interpretation of social reality and a tribute to an eventful life lived with grace and endurance.

“At a time when many young people today are searching for meaning in a fast-changing world, Yinka Akanbi’s AJO is an important reminder that identity, culture and belonging remain powerful anchors for personal growth and purpose. It is a book that deserves attention for its wisdom, authenticity and its celebration of the timeless values that hold communities together across generations.

It is a breezy but heartfelt ‘journey’ through life, culture and identity, a story shaped by family, community and the enduring values of the Yoruba ethos. From the vibrant cultural landscapes of Ibara in Abeokuta to Ipokia and Ibadan, the book eloquently traces the experiences, relationships and traditions that formed his worldview and character.”
